May 22, 2023

If you prefer controller over mouse and keyboard, there is good news.

If you’d rather play through Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC with a controller as opposed to keyboard & mouse, are are in luck. According to the Steam FAQ for Baldur’s Gate 3, full controller support is now in the RPG with its full launch. This is great news for players wanting to play via controller, as there was no controller support throughout all of Early Access.

So, does Baldur’s Gate 3 have controller support? The short answer is yes.

The process of enabling Baldur’s Gate 3 to use your controller is pretty straight forward. First, make sure your controller is properly working on your PC. If the controller is wired, make sure it’s hooked up. If it’s wireless, make sure your PC has properly detected it.

Once you know your controller is connecting, simply launch BG3. It should automatically detect your controller and give you a prompt to switch to controller.

Furthermore, you should go into the Settings and navigate to the Interface options. From here, make sure you switch Input Mode to Controller Only. If you don’t do this, the game may accept both controller and keyboard & mouse input. Some players have claimed issues with the game trying to handle both at the same time.

Even though Baldur’s Gate 3 does have controller support, some players have reported issues getting it working.

According to players, most people have had no trouble getting their Xbox controller to work with BG3. However, PlayStation controllers do not seem to be having as great of luck.

Also, if you are playing through GOG, it appears only wired controllers are detected via the platform.

If you are playing on Steam and having issues getting your controller to work, you can always go into your Steam Settings and navigate to the Controller menu. From here, you can manually remap your key binds to the controller. While this certainly isn’t ideal, it is a last resort option if you really wanted to play with controller and are unable to do so.
